On the occasion of the 20th anniversary, the film’s director Chris Columbus talks about the diversity of the fantastic magical world.
Because of the popularity of books, did you first feel the pressure to make a “Harry Potter” movie?
I thought I would be fired within the first two weeks. I was very upset, not to mention anxious, but I was aware of the fact that if I did it badly I would probably never do it again. And there will be millions of my fans in front of me just annoyed.
I knew in that look that I had a lot going for me, and I was never involved in a project that would do that much sorting. I went to Scotland for this film and talked with Joe Rowling for about three hours, to explain my point of view. I thought to myself ‘I have to make this picture for myself. I don’t think there will be millions of eyes when this film is released.
